During the initial period, the PhD programme will incorporate five members of the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna. Three members (Bugnyar, Fitch, Huber) have founded the new Department of Cognitive Biology. Ludwig Huber recently moved to the Messerli Institute at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.
The other two members are affiliated with the Department of Behavioural Biology (Kotrschal) and the Department of Evolutionary Biology. Each of the members has a diverse and well-funded research programme and strong international connections. More importantly, the research areas of all faculty members are conceptually and/or methodologically linked, spanning proximate and ultimate perspectives on animal behaviour and cognition research. These links will offer a variety of important synergies for the education of PhD students.
