What methods will you use?

The primary research methods we use to investigate cognition and communication in human and non-human animals are non-invasive.  Behavioural experiments are conducted with both captive (Vienna, Haidlhof, KLF Grünau, WSC Ernstbrunn, Zoo Vienna) and free-living (Grünau, New Zealand, Brazil, Bolivia, Uganda) animals.

Bioacoustics of communication signals are studied using an innovative combination of x-ray video, high-speed endoscopy, EGG, excised larynx work and ultrasound. Quantitative methods of behavioural analysis, long-term observations, playback, radio tracking, controlled hand rearing and, in cooperation, genetic analysis of sex and kinship and functional brain analysis may also be used.
